For Oscar week, here are two of GK’s leading ladies: his wife, Ruth Gordon, whose wit and wisdom are legendary; and Barbra Streisand, whom he directed in “Funny Girl” onstage."There’s a lot of fear in the world, and fear comes out as jealousy, as envy. I don’t get it. It’s a drag on the soul, and it keeps the person owning it from getting on with the business, whatever the business it is to do. We’ve got things to do, and we work toward getting them done. People will have a problem with that. Screw ’em! It’s their problem. It’s not yours. Just keep refining and working and showing up, and suddenly, you’re there and you’re working, and everyone thinks you were there and right for the gig all along. Other people will screw you: Don’t screw yourself. Believe in yourself. Show up and cheer."–Ruth Gordon/Interview with James Grissom/1984 (With Barbra Streisand)

March 13th is the anniversary of Garson Kanin’s death. In his honor—here’s some great perspective on his illustrious career, as well as a very candid, very GK interview. A taste: “If I could define what is for me the ideal style and the ideal accomplishment, it is to treat a serious subject lightly. I feel I succeeded with Born Yesterday . It’s a very serious play—and it’s funny. I’ve tried to do that again and again, and I’ve never succeeded as well as I did that time, but I still try. To write a comedy which is a lot of jokes doesn’t interest me at all. I don’t mind making jokes in real life, but in the theater I prefer a play to be something far more substantial. It ought to be laughter based on something a little more meaty.”Thanks, Gar. RIP.

The same Ingersoll—one of Billie Dawn’s heroes. This piece of writing was always kept on the desk of Garson Kanin:"My creed:To love justice, to long for the right,to love mercy,to pity the suffering, to assist the weak,to forget wrongs and remember benefits,to love the truth, to be sincere,to utter honest words, to love liberty,to wage relentless waragainst slavery in all its forms,to love family and friend,to make a happy home,to love the beautiful in art, in nature,to cultivate the mind,to be familiar with the mighty thoughtsthat genius has expressed, the noble deeds of all the world;to cultivate courage and cheerfulness,to make others happy,to fill life with the splendor of generous acts, the warmth of loving words;to discard error, to destroy prejudice,to receive new truths with gladness,to cultivate hope,to see the calm beyond the storm, the dawn beyond the night,to do the best that can be doneand then be resigned. This is the religion of reason, the creed of science. This satisfies the brain and the heart."Robert G. Ingersoll
